Implementation of IT Security Monitoring System

The 27th World University Summer Games in Kazan was the first Universiade, and
even more, the first high-profile multi-sport event in the history of modern Russia.
Therefore, it was important that the Universiade in Kazan should be arranged and held
up to the mark. Safety of athletes and guests and IT infrastructure security was a must.
As for the cybersecurity of the event, it was challenged by such factors as heightened
public interest in the event, a record breaking traffic to the official website of 2013
Summer Universiade kazan2013.com/ru, a vast number of users of internal IT systems
including remote ones. And above all, the international character of the event meant
high reputation risks in case of major IT security incidents.

Tasks

  1. To build a powerful tool for monitoring IT security events at all levels that enables efficient control over IT system operation including capture, analysis and storage of log data, detection of cyber attacks targeted at key IT infrastructure components, and automation of IT security monitoring operations of ICT infrastructure at Universiade 2013.

Solution

Within a very short time frame, ICL — KME CS team implemented IT security monitoring
system based on HP ArcSight solution in two data centers deployed for the Universiade
that included hundreds of units of multi-vendor hardware, servers and software. In less
than two weeks, over two dozen IT systems containing about 300 data sources were
integrated into ArcSight solution.

Result

The project team managed to build a reliable online monitoring system that is available
24/7 and allows to significantly reducing risks of IT security incidents.
